All right, on with the lesson! On the last lesson we talked about the special structure that you should follow to ensure clarity in idea transmission.
Introduction, plot, ending, and conclusion.
We didn’t go into depth last lesson, because we wanted you to focus on polishing your canvas and having a script to follow. Those two pieces should work as a stable foundation for the continued construction of your project. This time we’ll focus on the structure while using your script and canvas to create something new.
Let’s begin with the introduction. Imagine you are upon a stage about to begin a speech what should be the first thing you say well, certainly not diving street into the subject. There’s an invisible barrier between you and the audience so the first thing you should speak should be aimed to break that invisible barrier.
This barrier is also known as “The Ice”. Surely you heard of the expression breaking the ice several times, and what it really means is that you need to establish a meaningful bond with the public before exposing any subject. These will is the way and we’ll make them trust you in the process.
So which weapons could break such a fierce some barrier?
There is a couple actually, and you’ll forge your own weapons on the journey.
First weapon that can disarm any audience: a good joke know any? We know a lot because we understand it’s our greatest advantage. On the resources page you’ll find a document with a list of jokes. Also a simple Google search will lead you to thousands of good jokes.
If your project requires a certain degree of seriousness, I joke seems out of place. If you are in a difficult spot, try an anecdote to cause the same sensation. It could be a funny story or a sad situation you had to overcome. Most of us have been in similar places, so we will definitely make us nostalgic, and the dudes are often surprising and unrealistic this moment we’ll leave the audience saying “ I can’t believe it.”
If jokes are not your thing and anecdotes bore you, we have another resource you can rely on. Rest, assure that you’ve been using these resource since you turned one year old. Asking questions!
This is a literal way to establish a bond between audience and speaker. See somebody interesting in the public? Go ahead and approach them with a direct question is up to you to know which questions are the best. Some great questions are those who have an open answer and not just a yes or no answer.
For example: what do you expect to gain from this conference?
If the person across from you seems to be serious, please always ask prudently, if the person seems like an outgoing person, a personal question will definitely break the ice. Four instance where was your last trip to and why did you love the most?”
Needless to say, the question should hold relevance with your project.
For example, if you are creating a Ted talk about climate change, you should ask something like: excuse me, ma’am have you traveled some where exotic recently? How was the climate like? Would you like to have these weather, all year round in all of the planet? Well, let me tell you something, you should start getting used to it.
Several questions will allow you to inquire on your audience’s needs and thoughts. If you don’t like the answers, or they are not what you were expecting, move onto the next person!
Now, add a presentation of yourself. You may give your full name and the small curriculum of all your achievements. Your main focus should be to explain why you are doing this speech and the purpose of your outcome.
After you have stated all relevant information, you can leave the audience with a small cliffhanger. This could be an appetizer of what’s to come or a call to action. This way you will build up success and expectation.
All the previous is known as the introduction and it should cover at least 20% of your whole presentation.
You can continue with the plot which must be at least 30% of the contents. It is always marked by arguments, data and precise statistics. You will engage the audience and immediately grab their attention by throwing compelling and well established arguments. For example: Only 1% of all the water in the planet is potable. If we don’t take care of, it, will surely miss it in a near future.
Include as many strong arguments as you can, leaving the best for last.
A plot twist could be introduced to leave the audience at the edge of their seats. “99.9% of all species on this planet have already gone extinct. Humans may be next, and… yep! You guessed it! Those 45 minute showers aren’t helping anyone.” Could be a great plot twist to end the section.
The ending is the crossing bridge over the lava pit. It has to be perfect. You have to state all the solutions all the plans all the actions that your project is going to overtake to impact, positively and improve your community.
“My podcast about climate change will reach to approximately 350 people by giving them daily tips on how to take care of the resources will manage to reach 1000 people by the end of 2023.”
With a slight prediction, you’ll give people the need to follow your project until the end.
The conclusion is extremely important because it’s the last piece of information that the audience will take home with them. Therefore, it must be super convincing.
Make sure to restate the thesis of the whole story and leave an open door for all those who want to participate and spread the message.
I wish to live a better world for the future generations. This is the sole purpose of these podcast to promote the good use of resources and avoidance of waste with the help of all of you, will manage to create something truly extraordinary. “
And that’s the structure you should follow for every single text you write or talk from now on .
Stay tuned to keep developing your project.
As always, see you soon and remember to book a meeting!
